The Essence of Homeopathy

A beautiful flower

I am a homeopath. What does that mean really? To me it means that I am a steward of the most precious medicine that exists. I am a steward of the energy that exists within all things. Whether we are dealing with plants, minerals, animals or even crazier things like concrete, viruses or diseased tissue, I work within the realm of the energy of any one given remedy.

Some folks might say that homeopathy is some kind of voodoo, or some crazy method thought up by a German doctor two centuries ago. Well, to some extent all of that is correct. Voodoo? No. A crazy method to our very rational brain? Most likely. A German Doctor 2 centuries ago? Yes.

Homeopathy is much like a ceremony. It requires a person to set aside their rational brain and just be in the moment. To open ones heart and mind to the realms of what exists beyond the little white pellets that you hold in your hand. It is understanding that you are not working with the remedy, or taking the thing itself, but instead the deepest essence of it.

If you take Belladonna, for example, a very toxic plant that is found in the wild it will surely kill you, but when you take the essence of belladonna, your essence, and yes you have one, remembers. It remembers what balance was like. The homeopathic version of belladonna, reminds your body to pull itself back into balance. It is only in balance that the body can truly heal.

Some people are afraid of words like “essence”, “energy”, or “vitality". Whether or not those words scare you could have something to do with a belief system perhaps, albeit religious no doubt. I am not here to argue anyones spiritual path or belief system. What I will say is this, when you look at a flower, when you smell it, touch it, and really allow yourself to be in its presence you are taking in the truest essence of that flower. When you see a spider web covered in dew, and you stand in awe of its beauty you are recognizing its essence, its energy. When you see the light in 2 year olds eyes, you hear their squeal, and you notice their boundless energy you are in the presence of their energy, their vitality. Now compare the 2 year olds vitality to that of a 98 year old. It will, inevitably, be different.

In getting to work with the essence of things, at the very heart of something, we are privileged as homeopaths, but this path is not for everyone. As a practitioner of this art form it takes full dedication, and the understanding that we will forever be students, and that I may never become a master no matter how hard that I try. I stay the course though. I stay because homeopathy heals deeper than any other medicine in the world. It heals hurts that cannot be undone, but just like the flower you have to stop long enough to allow it to show you its essence. You have to stop and admire its intricate nature, and then, with patience and readiness you have to ceremoniously let it show you the way back to yourself.
